roblem areas and inconsistencies in the WHO lassification of thymoma

چکیده
The morphologic classification of thymoma has undergone numerous revisions in recent years and has been under continuous debate for the past several decades. With the introduction of the World Health Organization (WHO) schema for the classification of thymic epithelial neoplasms in 1999, a major step was taken toward achieving uniformity in the nomenclature of these tumors. A more recent iteration of the WHO morphologic classification of thymic epithelial neoplasms has now been published. Although these efforts have certainly contributed to clarifying many issues related to the pathology of thymoma, several problem areas and inconsistencies still remain surrounding this proposed schema. The purpose of this review is to address these problem areas, in particular as it relates to terminology, histopathologic criteria for diagnosis, and the prognostic significance for the various categories of the WHO schema. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. Posterolateral thoracotomy Approach for an Ectopic Mediastinum Thymoma: A Case Report
Thymic epithelial neoplasms are commonly aetiology of the anterior mediastinum masses in adults. It represents 20–30% of all mediastinal tumours in adults. Ectopic thymomas usually affect the neck, mediastinal compartments, lung, and pleura, arising from aberrant thymic tissue. For giant thymoma, there is still no consensus on the surgical approach. We herein report a patient with a giant thym...

Thymoma is the most common neoplasm of anterior mediastinum with incidence peaks during the fourth, fifth and sixth decades of life. Two-thirds of patients are asymptomatic and identified accidentally by chest x-rays . Of the total, 40-70 % of patients have one or more parathymic syndromes of which Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is the most common and reported in 10-50% . Gullain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) h...
متن کاملThymoma Associated with Hypergammaglobulinemia: A Case Report
Thymoma is a term that should be restricted to neoplasms of thymic epithelial cells, irrespective of the presence or the number of lymphocytes. The usual location of thymoma is the antrosuperior mediastinum; however, this tumor can also occur in other mediastinal compartments, in the neck, within the thyroid gland, in the pericardial cavity, the pulmonary hilum, within the lung parenchyma, o...
متن کاملTHE ASSOCIATION OF THYMOMA AND SUPERFICIAL PEMPHIGUS IN AN OLD WOMAN
The association of pemphigus and thymoma is real, although rare. We report a 73-year-old woman presenting with cutaneous bullac and erosions superimposed on erythematous and urticarial plaques, and a positive Nikolsky sign. She. had a large mediastinal mass that proved to be a benign thymoma. Her skin biopsy and direct immunofluorescence test were suggestive of superficial pemphigus.
متن کاملThymoma with pancytopenia: a case report and review of the literature
Although the most common hematological disturbance in thymoma is pure red cell aplasia, pancytopenia is a very rare paraneoplastic syndrome in this disorder. We only found one case in literature reviews. We report a 36 year old female with an anterior mediastinal mass and severe pancytopenia. With a mediastinotomy incision, biopsy of the tumor was obtained. The report of the pathologist was t...
